a time before smartphones: staring out of the train window
This tetraptych is the last in the “desert scene” series, each featuring a goat located in an urban setting. The series recalls the tradition mentioned in the Book of Leviticus, in which a kid goat is cast into the desert to carry away the sins of the community.
The work consists of four separate canvases (80 x 80 cm) with four different images. When these four canvases are hung together, they form a fifth image.
As with the canvas "Constructors on site (red-green)", I painted this work in grey tones with a palette of only three colours, English red, chrome green and the Kremser white version.
Yet look more closely within the composition and you will see that the weed-covered ground between the railway tracks - unlike the rest - is painted with additional colours. This more colourful part of the image denotes the object of the commuter's gaze and fascination, as they see how the rise and fall of the trackside plants mark the changing seasons.
